What is Breathwork?
Breathing is such a fundamental part of our lives. Most of the time it is a function that is occurring
in the background keeping us alive and we do not need to
be continually instructing the lungs to breathe in and breathe out just as the heart continues beating without our instruction. Unlike many other autonomic systems
in the body, the breath can be modulated by bringing our awareness to it.
When we are feeling anxious or scared taking a deep breath and letting out a long sigh
can help shift our state. Many of us develop breathing patterns that are shallow and unconscious leaving us out of breath or unable to calm down when our nervous
systems gets activated.
Breathwork is a powerful tool for reducing stress, gaining insight into our purpose, processing memories and difficult experiences while also being fundamental
to day to day existence.
All too often modalities encourage us to repeat the same patterns of over-riding the messages of our body and pushing past our discomfort. This practice meets you where
you are and has the primary goal of establishing and deepening our relationship to our bodies and to our own inner wisdom.
Breathwork provides direct access to our innate ability for healing and transformation without outsourcing its interpretation to an authority and without creating
dependency on anything outside of the breath to access this experience.
Transcendence without the body keeps us trapped in loops of craving and escape. This breathwork practice patiently returns us home to the divinity mediated by our bodies.
A note on lineage – while the exact lineage of this style of conscious connected breathwork is not known, it was most likely developed from yogic pranayama techniques
and kriya rebirthing practices. Additionally, breathwork has been and continues to be practised in cultures all around the world including shamanic and indigenous cultures.
Individual Breathwork Session
In a one on one session I work with clients to identify areas of growth, resourcing or healing that they are bringing to the practice. When you come to an individual
session you can show up with an issue, challenge, experience or emotion that you want to work with specifically or you can just come as you are that day.
Working one-on-one gives us the ability to respond to what comes up in the body as you move through the breathwork practice.
Together we work with how the breath is feeling and directing the energy through the body in the ways that feel most supportive and expansive.
The length and shape of these sessions are adapted and customized to each client's needs; it is
important to arrive where you are rather than pushing beyond your current capacity. Change, growth and healing comes through patience, compassion and also the diligent
work of showing up for ourselves.
About Peter
My name is Peter and I'm a settler with Mennonite roots on both sides of my family. I live on
Treaty 1, the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Dakota, Dene, Oji-Cree Nations and the homeland of the Red River Métis.
I completed a 2 year breathwork facilitator certification and practicum hours through
Breathwork for Recovery in 2025. I'm a person in recovery
from substance use, live with Multiple Sclerosis and a seizure disorder, love making art, and seek healing and liberation for all beings through my work and play.
Transformation at the individual and social level requires the study of systems of oppression such as white
supremacy and patriarchal conditioning through understanding as well as somatic abolition. Curiosity, compassion and commitment are important tools to carry with
us along the way. Breathwork has transformed my own life and I believe that it has the power to help so many others.
